Our current cycle is without international precedent: we have been fostering a Meyerbeer revival, savouring along with our audiences a string of musical masterpieces and rediscovering a narrator whose stories are as relevant today as they have ever been. Berlin’s greatest composer is now firmly re-ensconced in his home city and we hope our love of Meyerbeer’s works proves contagious.

Prizewinner's concert: Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition
Songs by Schubert, Strauss, Korngold, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov will be presented by the winner of this year's International Helmut Deutsch-Liedwettbewerb, Erika Baikoff (1994). The US soprano with Russian roots will be accompanied by one of the most famous pianists of our time, Helmut Deutsch.

The new production last year of “Heliane’s Miracle”, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s neglected masterpiece, was not only a hit with Berliners and an international clientele of operagoers. In a poll of critics in “Opernwelt” the production was voted “Revival of the Year”, with “Heliane” or its singers being backed by critics in no less than eight other categories.
